Fux codified the study of Palestrina-style counterpoint by presenting five categories of instruction, called species. Gradus was a standard counterpoint text studied by countless musicians during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The music of Palestrina has a very clean, precision to it. His Pope Marcellus Mass is prime example of the clarity of text, and restraint required by the decisions handed down by the Council of Trent. The text he harkens back to Gregorian Chant in that it only use the basic text for each song, without any filler, or elaborations.

He wrote it as a response against the complaints. He furthered the bounds of complexity by writing his choral compositions for six parts, and yet he made the Catholic liturgical music less complex by using fewer melismas and letting the voices sing the same syllables at the same time. 2021-04-15 Today Palestrina's style of writing music is still taught in many college level music courses and his music is widely used as the basis for learning 16th century counterpoint. It is for the above mentioned reasons that Palestrina went down in history as the first composer in classical music's history to be continuously preserved and maintained since the time he died.
